A final plea has been sent to the Government by West Yorkshire’s police chief not to take a gamble with policing in the Comprehensive Spending Review being announced on Wednesday.

Police forces have already been warned to prepare for Government cuts of anywhere between 25% and 40%.

Earlier this month the Examiner revealed the number of police officers in Kirklees has fallen by 90 in just five years . The number of full-time equivalent uniformed officers was 659 in April 2010 but that had dropped to 569 by this April.

By next March, West Yorkshire police will have 1,275 fewer police officers than in 2010 – a drop of 22 per cent.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman has told of his fears over the impact of any further cuts, and Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox has supported efforts in Parliament to stop the cuts from going ahead.

Now West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson has issued a last gasp plea to the Government .

He said: “West Yorkshire Police have already had to find huge savings and by cutting even further to a similar level the Government in my view will be taking an unnecessary gamble with our public safety collectively across the county.

“With 80% of our budget spent on people any further cuts will inevitably have an adverse effect on front line policing, particularly neighbourhood policing.

“I have been campaigning for the Government to sit up and take notice about the risks they are taking and I briefed MPs last week on the situation and urged them to use their influence to fight these proposed cuts.

“There is still time for the Government to take notice and take positive action.

“Tragic events in Paris recently have focused the need for well-resourced police forces.

“Other emerging threats such as cyber crime and human trafficking need dealing with too, but cutting police that provide the crucial link in our neighbourhoods and communities will be a huge mistake and I urge the Government to think again at this late stage.”
