A Crosland Moor couple who love golf and dance have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Twinkle-toed Roy Goggs quite literally swept his wife-to-be Val Arnott off her feet when they met at a dance at Huddersfield Town Hall in 1950.

It was a match well above par for the waltzing duo, who later went onto own a popular corner shop, named Roy Goggs, for almost 30 years.

And more than another 30 years later, Roy and Val celebrated their lifetime love affair by holding a big party at Crosland Heath Golf Club which hosted their reception on their wedding day on October 4, 1954. They were reunited with many wedding guests including bridesmaids, grooms and even the best man.

It’s the latest big milestone for the duo, who are now honorary members of the golf club after Val, who has been a member for 61 years, encouraged him to join, and for Roy, who clocked up 70 years working in his shop.

Val, now 80, was only 16 when she was won over by Roy, then 20. The couple married at St John’s Church in Birkby.

She said: “I can’t believe it really. It’s definitely been quite a year due to celebrating our wedding anniversary and my 80th birthday.

“Roy was a great dancer and was really lovely, then it just went on from there.”

After the wedding the pair became inseparable and moved in together before making their family home in Crosland Moor, after Roy, 84, took over the shop.

It was the perfect location to continue their joint passion for golf at Crosland Heath, where they still play today.

Fans of everything sports-related, they were also avid tennis players and continued to dance around the area for many years, whilst enjoying going to see Huddersfield Town.

The couple also have two children, Sue and Simon, and are grandparents to David, Marcus, Edward and Jonathan. They are expecting their first great grandchild later this year.
