A thief has been banned from entering branches of Boots by magistrates in Huddersfield.

The ban, on all the firm’s stores across West Yorkshire, comes after Erwin Tomaszewicz was convicted of theft.

He and an accomplice were said to have stolen perfumes worth £386.48 from its King Street shop.

Drug addict Tomaszewicz, 31, of Park Road West, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield, who is on benefits, pleaded guilty to the offence at an earlier hearing and was sentenced at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

Robert Campbell, prosecuting, said the offence occurred on March 2 when Tomaszewicz and Fatima Goman were jointly involved in the theft.

Mr Campbell said: “Fatima was seen by store detectives selecting perfumes and putting them in her basket.

“She went to another area of the store where she met this defendant.

“He removed the perfume and put it in his clothing.”

After leaving the store he was detained by a security officer from Primark following an in-store radio request from Boots.

Mr Campbell added: “In interview he accepted the offence of theft.

“He said Fatima, wanted the perfume. He made a full and frank admission. The goods were recovered.”

Tahir Mahmood, in mitigation, said: “He had no money. The decision was made to get some items to sell in order to buy some food.

“He has numerous convictions including 11 offences of theft but he has not troubled the courts for more than four years.

“He is looking to turn his life around.”

After reading a pre-sentence report the bench sentenced Tomaszewicz him to a nine months community order and ordered him to go on an extensive drugs rehabilitation programme.

Because of his “limited means” no costs were awarded but he was ordered to pay a £60 surcharge at £5 per week and subject to the store ban.
