One man remains in hospital with stab wounds after a terrifying fracas in Huddersfield.

The injured man was one of five people who were taken to hospital following a fight in a Crosland Moor street about dawn on Saturday.

Detectives have made four arrests but are continuing their inquiries and have made a fresh appeal for witnesses.

Police officers were called out shortly after 5.15am on Saturday to reports of people fighting in Sunningdale Road, which runs behind the former St Luke’s Hospital complex.

Two men were found injured in the street.

As police stepped up their inquiries through the morning, a further three people were discovered with injuries. Two were found on the Walpole estate at Crosland Moor, in Gilbert Grove and Thackeray Grove, while the other was in Haigh Street, Lockwood.

By Saturday lunchtime, a 26-year-old man, a 29-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman and a 30-year-old woman had been taken to hospital with stab and slash-type wounds.

Four of those people were allowed out of hospital over the weekend after being treated for injuries which are described as serious but not life threatening.

The fifth was expected to have further surgery on his wounds.

Four people have been arrested so far on suspicion of affray and have been released on bail pending further investigations.

The search is continuing for any weapons that may have been used in the fracas.

Det Insp Ian Thornes, of Kirklees CID, said: “We have been conducting extensive enquiries in the local area but would urge anyone who we have not already spoken to who saw or heard anything that could help our investigation to get in contact.

“At this time the motives for and circumstances of how these people have come to be injured are unclear; however it would appear that those involved are known to each other.

“Anyone with information or who has heard anything third-hand about what has happened is urged to call Kirklees CID on 101”.
