Four people were injured in a town centre knife brawl in the early hours of this morning.

Trouble flared between a large number of men in Cross Church Street, Huddersfield, at 4.30am when a fight broke out.

Police were on the scene within minutes and many of those involved fled.

But at least four men were injured and treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with non-serious injuries.

A large section of the town centre has been sealed off .

Two men have subsequently been arrested on suspicion of affray.

The incident was witnessed by a crowd of revellers enjoying late bars and the many take-aways in the area.

Police dispersed the crowd and the area was sealed off.

Det Insp Jim Griffiths, of Huddersfield CID. said: “Police were called to an incident at 4.30am in Cross Church Street to reports of a fracas involving two gangs of men.

“Four men were found to be injured and have been treated in hospital and their injuries are not believed to be serious.

“A knife has been recovered.

“Two men have been arrested on suspicion of affray and one for possession of an offensive weapon.”

He added: “We know there were a number of people involved in this disturbance and it was also witnessed by a large crowd.

“We will be reviewing CCTV of the area as part of our ongoing enquiries.

“We would urge anyone who saw what happened to contact Det Sgt Peter Usher at Kirklees CID on 101.”

Police close Cross Church Street and Queen Street, Huddersfield, after four injured in knife fight in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Cross Church Street remains sealed off this morning and forensic teams have been called to the scene.

Shoppers in the nearby Kingsgate could see the signs of the fracas just hours earlier as police tape surrounded the street beyond.

Yellow markers could be seen inside the cordon possibly showing blood or debris from the earlier altercation.
