Fire crews are still dealing with a blaze at a wood factory above Holmfirth.

The firefighters spent all of Monday tackling the fire in a huge stack of woodchips at the R Plevin & Sons plant at Crow Edge and were back again today.

It is expected they will be there again tomorrow.

The firefighters, including one crew from Skelmanthorpe and several from South Yorkshire, have been tackling a series of deep-seated pockets of fire in the wood.

A brigade spokesman said: “It is a long and difficult task because the fire is so deep-seated.

“They cannot simply pour huge amounts of water on the stacks of wood because that will simply spread it around.

“They are building fire breaks in the yard and tackling each pile of wood at a time, breaking it up and getting right to the heart of where the fire

“It is a long task and we have been appealing to people living and working around the plant to keep their doors and windows closed. There is a lot of smoke and although it is not harmful, it is thick and can be very unpleasant”.

One local resident said: “Local residents have been told to keep windows and doors closed because of acrid smoke. This is the second time that the firm has had a outbreak of fire.

“The smoke from the fire is covering the valley. We have had to close our windows as the smell is very bad.

“We have to put up with large wagons past our home 20 hours a day transporting wood to the firm. Now we are being inconvenienced with a second outbreak of smoke in six weeks, not to mention the problems for livestock in the fields, and the cost of all the fire services attending the incident”.
