Thousands of visitors celebrated a golden gala day in Brighouse on Saturday.

A vibrant procession kicked off the event at midday and took on a circular route to Wellhome Park.

And to mark the 50th anniversary of the much-loved event the event’s first gala queen, Judy Pilling, rode in the procession.

Jean Ainley, along with her husband Ernest, are life long stalwarts of the gala and managed to find over a dozen past gala queens who were invited on stage for the opening ceremony.

But the task of residing over this year’s event fell to gala queen Imogen Turner and her attendant April Quinn.

Traditional family fun included a ducking stool, duck race, donkey rides, model train rides and a fairground, alongside all the charity and catering stalls.

Four bands – West Yorkshire Police Brass band, Huddersfield Brass Band, Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass band (who played in the first back in 1965) and Eclipse band – provided musical accompaniment.

Charities which took part in the event included Calderdale National Autistic society, Heartbeat, the Stroke Association, charity Bricks4kids, Brighouse and District Lions Club.

Local groups including Brighouse scouts and guides and the Hailfax Bruising Banditas, Diamond Gymnastic club, Brighouse Star Twirl and Huddersfield 59 Squadron Air Cadets also took part.
