IT’S a sobering thought for any hard-up Town supporter diligently saving for next weekend’s glamour FA Cup game at Chelsea.
Seventy years ago you could have gone to the FA Cup Final between Town and Preston and enjoyed bed and breakfast at London’s five-star Waldorf Hotel – all for the price of half a pint!
Peter Livesey, of Gilthwaites Lane, Denby Dale, has found receipts showing how much it cost his father, Jim, and four fellow Town fans to watch Town’s 1-0 defeat at Wembley on April 30, 1938, and to stay the night at the Waldorf.
The five pals spent 7s 6d each – about 37p in new money – on their match tickets.
At that price, 67 fans could have bought tickets for the £25 it is costing Town followers for a seat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday week.
And a receipt from the Waldorf shows it was £4 3s 2d – roughly £4.16 – for bed and breakfast for all five of them that night.
Today, the cheapest room would cost you £199. Breakfast is a snip at an extra £40 a room.
Mr Livesey, whose father died in 1956 aged 56, said: “It’s amazing when you think about it.
“The way things have gone, it’s hard to imagine prices were ever like that, but the proof is here.”
Jim Livesey, who lived at Longwood Road, Paddock, worked for David Brown Gears at Meltham and Penistone.
He later ran the Junction pub at Manchester Road, Crosland Moor, the Rose and Crown at Thurstonland and the Allied at Honley.
He was secretary of the David Brown Football Club and the Affiliated Sunday Schools Football League and was given a commemorative clock by the league when he retired.
Peter Livesey went to games at Leeds Road with his father and later took his sons, Carl and Paul.
He said: “They’ve got tickets for the Chelsea game, but there’s no way they’ll be staying at the Waldorf like their grandad!”
He said there was some hope for Town against Chelsea, adding: “Everybody thinks it’s going to be a walk-over for Chelsea, but if they can get a draw and bring it back to the Galpharm, anything can happen.”
