YOUNG people are trying to change the image of a Huddersfield area hit by this year’s disturbances.

Twelve teenagers handed out free cupcakes in Deighton as part of the Make It Happen project.

Organiser Mandeep Samra said: “We’re based in the Chestnut Centre, which was vandalised.

“When the riots took place we thought it was even more important for young people to make links with local people and show how proud they are of their area.

“It’s really important to show that young people are doing brilliant things.”

Twelve young people aged between 13 and 25 from Deighton, Brackenhall and Fartown made 350 cupcakes which they handed out.

Ms Samra said: “There weren’t a lot of people on the streets because of the rain so they went from door to door.

“Initially, there might have been some suspicion but the yummy cupcakes brought smiles to people’s faces.”

A special inquiry dubbed Operation Ringway was launched following the unrest in the region, with Huddersfield police arresting almost 50 people – more than anywhere else in West Yorkshire.

But none have been charged so far and the investigation continues.

All remain on bail.

The incidents on August 9 included the Chestnut Centre and Top Club in Sheepridge being attacked by thugs, an ATM cash machine being stolen, the Home Start family centre in Dalton being hit by a petrol bomb attack and looters storming Asda in Brackenhall.
