THE last post is being sounded for the second delivery in Holmfirth.

From Monday, homes in the town and surrounding villages - with postcode HD9 - will get only one postal delivery a day.

The change is part of a national move by the Royal Mail to amalgamate first and second deliveries into one single round.

A spokesman said the changes would mean no loss of jobs at Holmfirth's sorting and delivery office.

Andy Lamb, Royal Mail general manager, said: "Second deliveries account for 20% of Royal Mail costs, but represent just 4% of the daily mailbag.

"It makes sense to combine first and second deliveries."

Customers will in future receive all their post in one delivery by lunchtime.

Most mail will be delivered much earlier with rounds starting from 7am.

The Royal Mail says some homes will see little or no change from their current delivery times.

People who want their mail early will be able to use a new free service and collect it at the delivery office from 8.30am on request.

Customers should apply in advance so the security of the mail is protected. Application forms are available from the office, next to the bus depot, in Station Road, Holmfirth HD9 1AA, or by phoning Royal Mail customer services on 0845 602 4536.
