YORKSHIRE Water has cut the amount of water it loses through leakage for the ninth year in a row.

New figures from water regulator Ofwat show Yorkshire Water reduced leakage to 295m litres a day, beating the target of 299m litres set for 2003/2004.

It means the amount of water lost through leaks on the company's own network and customers' private supply pipes has been cut by more than 40% since 1995.

This is more than enough water to meet the combined daily demands of Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley.

The company's water conservation manager, Clare Dunlop, said: "Once again we have beaten the leakage target, which is extremely pleasing.

"Since 1995 we have invested heavily in the water mains network and leakage reduction has always been a major focus of our work."

Yorkshire Water's leakage record had been helped by reducing the time it takes to detect and repair burst and leaking mains.

Miss Dunlop added: "We would like to ask anyone who does spot a leak to call our leak line on 0800 573 553."
