POLICE have closed their year-long investigation into the mysterious death of a cyclist.

The files on David Burns' death will now be examined by a coroner in Leeds.

Murder squad detectives had been investigating the circumstances of David's death at Coxley Woods in Midgley, near Flockton, since March last year.

The 38-year-old Mirfield man of Priory Way died on March 3 2005 after sustaining injuries in the woodland beauty spot on February 13.

The market trader was thrown from his mountain bike during a ride in the woods when he encountered a branch and a trunk laid across the track he was on.

He took 15 minutes to recover from the fall and was able to complete his bike ride.

But just two weeks later the lifelong Dewsbury Rams fan collapsed at home and was diagnosed with a serious head injury.

David died at Leeds General Infirmary.

He was a former pupil of Battyeford School in Mirfield and also took Business Studies at Huddersfield Tech.

David was a director of his father Ivor's company, Burns' Shoes, which has stores in Leeds, Halifax and Dewsbury.

Following his death police asked for help from the public.

They returned to the site of the mountainbike crash to speak to other users of Coxley Woods.

Det Insp Mark Ridley said: "We have concluded our investigations in this case and passed a file to the coroner.

"We are unable to comment further." An inquest into David's death is due to be heard in Leeds in April.
