Cyclist Nathan Clegg proved a whizz on two wheels in a charity triathlon event alongside Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jonny.

Nathan, 36, of Linthwaite, was part of Dewsbury-born Alistair’s relay team and set a new cycling course record averaging 22.1mph.

However, Nathan lost count on the four-mile laps and ended up doing one too many – costing Team Al victory.

Nathan, a member of Holmfirth Cycling Club, was chosen to take part in the Macmillan Brownlee Tri North at Harewood House in Leeds on Sunday.

Alistair swam the first leg, Nathan cycled the second and another competitor, Simon Lord, who beat prostate cancer, ran the final leg.

Team Al finished fourth out of 20 but, to rub salt in the wounds, Team Jonny came out on top.

Nathan, a graphic designer, said: “I started off really well and was ahead but somehow I lost count and ended up doing an extra lap, and that cost us.

“I guess that’s what happens sometimes when the adrenaline is flowing. I should have done four laps but I did an extra one.

“When I started out on the fifth I thought I’d done too many but by then it was too late to turn back.

“I didn’t want to get to the end and be told I’d only done three laps and be disqualified.

“I set a course record and without my mistake we would have won. It was just one of those things.”

The event saw 1,000 competitors, most of them cancer survivors, conquer the terrors of the triathlon.

Nathan said: “It was a really emotional day with some people crying as they crossed the finish line.

“Hearing their stories put my experiences in the shade.”
