DADS went back to school to give their sons a helping hand.

Fathers and sons spent a day together at Paddock Junior, Infant and Nursery School and took part in joint activities in a bid to boost the youngsters' grades.

"It's part of a continuing project to raise boys' achievement," said Elaine Ratcliffe, who teaches citizenship at the Heaton Road school.

The day included DJ workshops, as well as cookery classes, where the duos could make baked beans and Snickers pie.

Best-selling children's poet Gez Walsh held a lyrical workshop.

Mrs Ratcliffe was delighted by the event's success.

"We were so pleased, especially with the fact that so many fathers were here. Many must have taken time off work," she said.

About 30 fathers helped out with activities.

Some of them will be returning to help with reading classes.

Girls, too, took part in a range of special activities throughout the day.
