Sporting heroes past and present helped the Huddersfield-based Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice strike gold.

Double Olympic gold medalist Daley Thompson, Olympic silver medalist Jamie Baulch and rugby union star Phil Davies were the guests at a sporting dinner.

The event, held at the John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield, raised almost £12,000 for the Brackenhall-based charity.

It was billed as a Sporting Dinner of Gold Medal Standards and guests lapped up tales of sporting glory.

Decathlete Thompson, who won Olympic golds in 1980 and 1984, sprinter Baulch, who lifted the 400m silver medal in 1996, and former Wales international Davies, now coach of national side Namibia, ensured a great night of sporting memories and humour.

Entertainer Thompson brought the house down with one of his witty one liners when he said: “Once I got to my top level I knew I was always gonna be first or second - and so did everyone else!”

The event was hosted by another former Olympic athlete turned TV presenter Steve Cram.

Lucy Burnett, fundraising events manager at the hospice, said the dinner had raised almost £12,000 and added: “We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made the evening such a great success, from our sport stars to our sponsors to our guests, it really was a fantastic night.”

The boost came at a welcome time for the Hospice, which remains closed after a serious fire in January.

Workmen have had to carry out extensive repairs to the electrical systems and Hospice staff are now caring for young patients in their own homes.
