The little boy who was mauled by a dog at his grandparents’ home in Dalton on Saturday afternoon is recovering in hospital.
Police say the 14-month-old tot, Jensen, is “comfortable” at Leeds General Infirmary with his devastated mum Stephanie Dunk, 20, anxiously sitting at his bedside.
Given his age he is being kept in hospital for observation.
They are still investigating the incident which led to the toddler receiving treatment for a number of injuries including a fractured jaw and lacerations.
Jensen was being cared for by his mother’s boyfriend’s mum when the dog set upon him in the garden of Thorp Pyn Croft.
Detectives believe the dog snapped as temperatures soared to 29 C, the hottest day of the year so far, and attacked the child.
Miss Dunk who lives in Paddock was at work at the time of the incident.
A specialist officer from West Yorkshire Police’s dog unit is trying to tell whether the dog involved, a Staffie-type dog, was a banned breed or not.
Det Insp Andy Leonard said today: “The toddler is still in hospital and is ‘comfortable’.
“We are still investigating whether the dog was a banned breed.”
