A drink-driver who fled the scene of a crash was linked to the offence by the saliva he left on the airbag of his car.

Craig Whitehead, of Tolson Crescent in Dalton, claimed he was not the driver.

He was forced to change his account when the DNA was confirmed as his.

The 32-year-old had also given false details at the scene of the smash, where he collided with a drystone wall.

Catherine Moxon, prosecuting, told Kirklees magistrates that the offence happened at around 10pm on April 28.

Whitehead lost control of his Ford Focus and hit a wall in Hepworth Lane in Mirfield.

Ms Moxon said: “A neighbour heard the crash, saw that the defendant was drunk and called police.”

The prosecutor said that Whitehead fled, having failed to drive away.

He was found clutching his head and, following treatment in hospital, was taken to the police station.

At 2am Whitehead completed the breathalyser procedure, which showed that he had 61 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

The legal limit is 35mgs.

He was quizzed the following day and initially claimed that his friend had been driving the car.

Whitehead then accepted that he was in fact the driver after the DNA evidence was put to him, Ms Moxon said.

She said: “It was confirmed that the defendant was the driver via saliva he had left in the airbag.

“The defendant said that he had four to five pints of lager.

“He said he swerved to avoid an animal in the road.”

Mark Brookes, mitigating, said that on the evening of the offence his client had been celebrating his birthday with friends in Batley.

He said that in an ‘error of judgement’ Whitehead decided to drive home as he didn’t want to leave his car in town.

Mr Brookes said: “There was an error of judgement because of the quantity of alcohol he consumed.

“This was further aggravated by the fact that when he spoke to the owner of the wall he gave false details.

“He left then told police he was not the driver.

“That put police to the expense of checking the DNA on the airbag.”

Magistrates banned Whitehead from driving for 20 months.

They also ordered him to pay 110 fine, 90 costs and 20 victim surcharge.
