A Dalton man has been jailed after stealing from three Huddersfield stores.

Patrick Harrington first targeted Matalan on May 21, Kirklees magistrates heard.

The store’s security alarms were activated as the 39-year-old and a female accomplice took clothing worth £92.

Harrington was later identified from CCTV footage and arrested.

Less than a week later on May 27 he stole two jackets valued at just over £100 from Outdoor World in the town centre.

He was challenged by a store security officer in the Piazza Shopping Centre and returned to the shop.

While he was on bail for these offences Harrington, of Longfield Avenue, stole from another shop in the town.

Yesterday (June 13) he took an indoor CCTV system worth £119 from Maplin on Leeds Road.

A member of staff observed him as he placed the item in a bag and then tried to leave the store without paying for it.

He was detained with the help of members of the public.

All of the goods were recovered by the stores, the court heard.

Harrington’s solicitor Paul Blanchard explained that his client had an unenviable record and had been sentenced to time in custody for recent offences.

He told magistrates that when Harrington was released from custody he would revert to type and commit offences again.

Magistrates jailed him for 16 weeks.

Harrington will have to pay a £115 victim surcharge upon his release.
