A teenager was arrested after plain clothed police smelt cannabis on him as he walked past.

Troy Wallace, of Harpe Inge in Dalton, pleaded guilty to possession of the class B drug.

He was with two other males walking in the Dalton area on March 30 when the officers noticed the distinct smell of cannabis.

The 19-year-old initially fled before turning around and heading back towards the officers and handing himself in.

Kirklees magistrates heard that Wallace had a previous conviction for possession of cannabis with intent to supply it.

Rachel Sharpe, mitigating, said that her client suffered from depression and smoked the drug in order to control his anxiety.

Magistrates fined the teen £25 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
