THEY are about to make a little bit of TV history.

Dancers from Huddersfield and Brighouse have recreated a tap-dancing record.

And it is set to be featured on one of the final programmes recorded at the BBC Television Centre in west London.

The iconic buildings, sold for conversion into a hotel and apartments, are set to close on March 31.

News broadcasts from the centre have already moved on. But magazine programme, The One Show, is still based at the studio and they have filmed the dance show for their last broadcast on Friday, March 22.

The tapdancing film was set up to recreate a memorable moment from 1977 when the late Scholes-born entertainer Roy Castle had hundreds of people dancing in the courtyard.

It was a stunt for the show Recordbreakers.

Now The One Show has filmed a repeat of the dance and roped in dancers from West Yorkshire.

Janet Austin, who runs adult tap classes in The Zone, St Andrew’s Road, Huddersfield and the Waring Green Community Centre, Brighouse, has been involved with the Roy Castle Tapathonfor years. The charity dance marathon has so far raised more than £300,000.

She said: “I got a phone call from The One Show at the BBC to ask if we would like to go down to the BBC to take part in a mass tap dance.

“The BBC television centre is relocating and The One Show will be the last programme to be recorded in the present location, so they decided it would be great to recreate the record breaking tap dance that Roy Castle did in 1977.

“Matt Baker from The One Show would perform the role that Roy Castle did in 1977. As I understand the BBC had spoken to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation staff and I assume they were interested in us going down to the BBC as we have taken part in the annual tapathon locally, for Roy’s charity.

“I was joined by 41 of my ladies from both the classes in Huddersfield and Brighouse and when we arrived we were greeted by a camera crew and taken into one of the studios along with all the other dancers.

“Over 500 dancers took part, many of them from stage schools. We had to rehearse the dance in another studio along with the choreographer Arlene Phillips and while we were doing our rehearsal slot Matt Baker was also practising.

“We were put into lines ready to be taken outside for our positions in the courtyard, where the original recording took place.

“Fortunately the rain stayed away though it was very cold. We had to do a few technical rehearsals outside in the courtyard. It was a fabulous atmosphere, with everyone from all the different schools just chatting to each other.

“Matt Baker spoke outside before we started saying we were going to take part in making history.

“We were all given a One Show T-shirt and then went back outside. The atmosphere was still buzzing with Mexican waves taking place while we waited to perform the dance. We did several takes and then sadly it was time to get changed and head home.

“It was an absolutely amazing experience”.
