A SPECIAL music night is being held in Huddersfield to get the anti-drugs message across to young people.

R&B, hip hop and ragga will hit the turntables at the event for under-18s.

The event, which includes a freestyle MC competition, has been organised by the Drug Sense organisation.

It will be in the Elements bar, facing Chapel Hill, next Thursday.

Drug Sense worker Dan Dearnley said: "The aim of the event is to raise awareness of our organisation in a relaxed, informal setting.

"We want the teenagers to come along and have a good time, enjoy themselves and - very importantly - we also want parents to know we are doing something positive to help this age group."

Drug Sense is part of Lifeline Kirklees and is paid for through the Kirklees Drug Action Team.

It is made up of staff from different backgrounds and offers counselling and treatment for young people with substance misuse problems.

At-risk groups are also targeted with advice.

Mr Dearnley added: "This particular night is all about letting the youngsters meet up in a safe environment to do something they enjoy while we mingle and get across the message that there are risks to drug and alcohol use.

"They will also learn about Drug Sense, what we are about and how we can help and support them.

"This is a pilot event, but we hope it will be a success. We will organise similar nights across Kirklees if we get the right feedback."

The event runs from 7pm until 10pm and prizes for the freestyle MC competition include studio recording production time from Connected2, of St Peter's Street, Huddersfield, a £100 voucher from Destiny clothes shop in Westgate and a £50 voucher from Cube fashions, of New Street.

DJs will include Magic K and Solid C. Tickets are £3 on the door.
