A MAN has appeared in court charged with spraying a dangerous gas at Christmas.
Sean Connolly, of Marsh Lane, Shepley, is charged with using a cannister of pepper spray – which contains a chemical irritant – in Wakefield Road, Clayton West, on Christmas Eve.
Connolly, 42, denies the charge.
Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday that he told police he was attacked by a gang.
He said one of them had a can of the noxious substance, which is often used by police in riot control but is banned for personal use.
The man is said to have dropped the can after the assault.
Judge Jonathan Bennett heard that Connolly says he told police about the incident and was told by an officer to keep hold of the can until he could be questioned further.
Connolly’s case was adjourned so that further details could be obtained from the officer involved, to see if Connolly has a reasonable excuse for possessing the cannister.
The case will next be heard at 2pm on May 8.
Connolly was granted unconditional bail until then.
