The daughter of a murder victim was arrested after struggling to comply with a court order.

Melanie Collins, of Brown Royd Avenue in Rawthorpe, admitted breaching the terms of her community order.

Kirklees magistrates heard that she has suffered several tragedies in her life, including seeing the death of her father John.

Mr Collins, 55, died of head injuries after an unprovoked attack in Brockholes in July 2010.

Collins, 29, appeared at the Huddersfield court in custody the day after the anniversary of his death.

Her community order for offences of theft and fraud was made as a direct alternative to custody. The sentence, given on March 8, included 30 hours of activities and a curfew.

Collins pleaded guilty to failing to attend two probation appointments on May 1 and 9. She had breached the order on April 30 and had three hours of activities added.

Ian Whiteley, mitigating, said that his client had suffered a “sad life” over the last three years.

He referred to the killing of Mr Collins, who was attacked as he walked to collect his young daughter.

Christopher Burton, of Oakes Avenue in Holmfirth, and Douglas Stephen, of Bootle, Merseyside, were both found guilty of his murder and jailed for life.

Mr Whiteley said: “She’s had a very difficult life. In the last 12 months her father’s partner committed suicide. The only other family member she’s got is her brother who is serving a lengthy custodial sentence.”

She had battled a long-standing drug issue, which explained her lack of compliance.

Magistrates added an extra 10 days of activities to Collins’ community order with a warning that she faces jail should she breach the order again.
