A MAN who stabbed three members of the same family, killing one of them, has been found hanging in his prison cell.

Paramedics were called after mechanic Gavin Hogg was discovered hanging at Armley Prison in Leeds. But he was pronounced dead.

Hogg, 35, of Wellhouse Lane, Mirfield, was serving life after attacking three members of the same family at M and B Haulage on the Low Mills industrial estate, Ravensthorpe, in September, 2005.

David Burrows, 36, was fatally wounded and his father, Darrell Burrows, 62, and uncle Clive Hoyland, 52, were injured.

The incident followed a long-running dispute between the family and Hogg, who ran GL Autos, next to M and B, over rubbish, access and land.

Earlier this month Hogg was told he would not be allowed to appeal against his conviction.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said Hogg was found hanging early yesterday.

He was pronounced dead at 4.45am.

She added: "Every death in custody is a tragedy and our sympathies are with the family and friends of Mr Hogg.

"As with all deaths in custody the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."

The murder came just a day after Hogg was convicted of common assault and criminal damage following an attack on Darrell Burrows.

Hogg had told a neighbour he was going to kill him by drowning him and making it look like an accident.

He dragged Mr Burrows from his car and pulled him to a canal bank, where he attacked him.

The day after he was convicted for the attack Hogg rammed Mr Burrows's car and stabbed the men with a kitchen knife in 35 seconds.

The judge at the murder trial described him as the neighbour from Hell.

He ordered that Hogg should serve life, with a minimum of 20 years before being considered for parole.

Mr Hoyland, who had life-saving surgery, later bitterly criticised police for doing too little too late.

He said: "Had it not been for the inept conduct of the police my nephew would still be alive.

"I told the police time and time again that Hogg was extremely dangerous and that he was threatening to kill my brother.

"My concerns were ignored on numerous occasions."
