A MAN who fell to his death in a Huddersfield canal has been named.

Samuel Owen was killed after plunging from the Leeds Road bridge into Huddersfield Broad Canal at Deighton, at about 3.25am on Sunday.

He had been walking home with a 27-year-old friend after a night out in the Leeds Road area, when the tragedy happened.

Mr Owen, of Ashbrow Road, Sheepridge, worked at Thornton Fencing near his home.

He is thought to have fallen from the bridge on to a banking and then slid into the 9ft-deep water.

Police, fire and ambulance crews joined in the rescue attempt but they were unable to save Mr Owen.

An inquest is expected to open at Huddersfield Coroner's Court tomorrow.
