A woman who spent more than half a century working in Huddersfield textile mills has died.

Mrs Helga Stead, who was 98, began working in the mills at the age of 14 and went on working until she was well into her 60s.

Mrs Stead worked as a weaver at Knowles Kaye in Huddersfield and also at Crowthers in Milnsbridge for many years.

She was born Helga Wadsworth in Saltaire, near Bradford, but her family moved to the Colne Valley when she was a young child and she was brought up in Marsden and Slaithwaite.

She married Alfie Stead and the couple enjoyed more than 50 years of married life.

They lived in Huddersfield for most of their life but retired to Blackpool in 1985.

Mrs Stead loved walking, often doing a seven-mile walk each day, and also knitting.

She leaves four daughters, 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service took place at the Park Crematorium in Lytham St Annes.
