GERALD Harkin, the husband of the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Mary Harkin, has died.

He died in Dewsbury District General Hospital on Saturday, after several months of illness

Mr Harkin was a retired engineer and a keen aviation enthusiast, having served in the Royal Air Force.

The couple have two children and two grandchildren.

Batley East Labour councillor Mary Harkin, who has served on Kirklees Council since 1990, was elected mayor in June.

Her husband attended the ceremony and became her consort.

Clr Harkin is a member of many voluntary and charitable organisations.

She has served on the education, social services and environment committees and, more recently, has been chairman of Batley Area Committee, the Grants Advisory Committee and a member of Kirklees Education Scrutiny Panel.

Clr Harkin's grand- father was also a councillor in Batley.
