SOCIAL workers striving to improve life for the people of Romania will gather in Huddersfield to talk about the next steps.

Staff from six British councils are involved in the Government-funded project.

They have been offering advice in key areas, including services for older people, child protection and substance misuse.

Kirklees has supported projects since 1997 in and around Arad, a city in western Romania.

Social services workers from Romania will travel to Huddersfield University for the conference on Wednesday, September 15.

Clr Dennis Hullock, the Kirklees Council Cabinet member with responsibility for health and social care, said: "It is an important programme which continues to provide significant support to our colleagues in Romania.

"As well as supporting the development of social care needs in Romania, this conference will show how councils with different cultures can work well together."

Britain's Department for International Development pays for the work.
