A runaway deer made a swim for it ... chased by several police officers.

The deer was spotted in Huddersfield town centre this lunchtime and around six police tried to corner it in a car park on Old Leeds Road – but it then jumped into the nearby Huddersfield Broad Canal.

The drama at around 1.30pm was captured on film (above) by John Robinson, owner of graphic design company The Design Bank which has offices overlooking the canal.

He said: “The police closed our car park but it then jumped into the canal and started swimming.”

Staff lost sight of the deer but police later said it was ‘safe.’

By a strange coincidence John lives in Slaithwaite and said he had seen two wild deer in his back garden on Thursday night.
