THE future of Deighton Sports Arena is safe.

That was the pledge from Kirklees sporting officials after speculation over the sprawling complex.

Kirklees Council recently closed The Deighton Centre, which was used as an education facility by many organisations, and it has been speculated that Deighton Sports Arena has also closed.

But Kirklees Active Leisure has confirmed this is not the case and the sports centre is thriving.

A KAL spokesman said: “Deighton Sports Arena is a popular local centre independent to The Deighton Centre and there are no plans in the foreseeable future to the close the arena.

“There are lots of great facilities at Deighton Sports Arena including the fitness suite, sports hall ideal for indoor football, basketball, netball, badminton and table tennis, dance studio plus there is a meeting room perfect to hire for seminars, meetings, conferences, table tennis and children’s parties. The meeting room has full dial up internet access, projector and whiteboard.

“The fitness suite has a membership scheme which includes use of the fitness suite and classes. There is also the option to ‘pay and play’ making the facilities accessible for all.”

The Arena is based on the site of the former Deighton High School.

Kirklees Council closed The Deighton Centre in March.

Officers felt the centre was too big and too costly to maintain.

The shutdown was part of a major scheme to rationalise office use by Kirklees Council staff in the face of Government cuts to their budgets.

It was widely used for conferences and for training courses, as well as many social functions.
