A vandal damaged a family BMW in a crime spree ... and then called the police on himself.

David Choudrey from Deighton caused £1,000 worth of damage to the £31,000 car before turning himself in.

Huddersfield Magistrates heard the Lockwood family had since been left in “significant distress” and “fearing for their safety” since the attack in July.

The court heard from the prosecution that Choudrey, 45, of Shepherds Grove, also damaged a window at the family home with the full cost of damage totalling £6,700.

The vandalism spree which involved kicking the car’s bodywork and smashing its windows happened while the daughter of the BMW owner was at home.

The court heard Choudrey was in the area as his mother lives nearby.

Choudrey called the police on himself while the horrified family member also called for them.

He later admitted in an interview that he had caused the damage.

Magistrates heard how schizophrenic Choudrey had “no idea” as to why he caused the damage, but said he had not been taking medication and had been smoking cannabis at the time.

Chairman of the bench Mr David Monks gave Choudrey an eight-week sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He told Choudrey he had caused “significant damage”.

Choudrey was also given a 12-month restraining order on the victims’ property on Yews Hill Road.
