Smoke from a Leeds city centre fire has led commuters to be warned to expect severe delays.

The A64(M) New York Road has been closed in both directions after the blaze at the 14-storey derelict office block on Trafalgar Street, LS2.

Traffic is queuing between North Street and Marsh Lane, and drivers have been warned to expect “severe” delays as a result while the fire is tackled.

A spokesman said the fire was in five per cent of the third storey of the building so was well contained and was not expected to spread.

He said firefighters were alerted at 2.37pm to the building, believed to be a former British Gas office block .

Twitter users have been sending pictures onto the social network as thick plumes of smoke escaped from the building.
