MOTORISTS face months of delays on one of Huddersfield’s busiest roads.

Kirklees Council will begin strengthening work at Chapel Hill Bridge on Monday.

The stretch of road carries the A616 over Huddersfield Narrow Canal and links the town centre with Lockwood and the Holme Valley.

The work is due to last for three months.

A Kirklees spokesman said yesterday: “In order to minimise disruption as much as possible, the bridge works are being co-ordinated with the highway improvement works currently being undertaken on Chapel Hill in readiness for the new Kirklees College and Waterfront developments.”

News of the planned work comes just 24 hours after the council announced plans to spend more than £1m on major resurfacing schemes on two other busy roads.

Wakefield Road, from Waterloo to Dalton, and Penistone Road from Woodsome to Fenay Bridge are both expected to be subjected to many weeks of work.

Meanwhile motorists will face delays when resurfacing starts on St Andrews Road and Thistle Street, Huddersfield.

The work will bring a £625,000 road maintenance scheme to a close on one of Huddersfield’s busiest roads.

The resurfacing will start on Sunday, July 29, and the road is to be resurfaced between the A629 Wakefield Road and A62 Leeds Road.

It follows the recent footway and drainage improvements and the upgrading of the pedestrian crossing facilities to help local people cross the busy road. The resurfacing is expected to be completed by late August, weather permitting.

During the work, St Andrews Road will become one-way towards Leeds Road from Monday to Friday for four weeks between Wakefield Road and Thistle Street. There will also be a temporary 20mph speed limit in place for the duration of the work.

Traffic travelling from the A62 Leeds Road will be diverted via the A62 Leeds Road, Southgate and A629 Wakefield Road.

The aim is to minimise the disruption to traffic on a route that bypasses the Huddersfield Ring Road, but also to help local people and businesses whilst the resurfacing work takes place.

Businesses, residents and others affected by the scheme have been consulted on how disruption and disturbance could be minimised whilst the works are taking place.

The resurfacing will be carried out predominantly during the night between 7pm and 7am Monday to Friday.

St Andrews Road will be closed in one direction only during the day between 9am and 3pm which will allow vehicles to travel from Wakefield Road towards Leeds Road only.

Drivers are being warned of the works in advance so they have the option of using alternative routes.

Road closures and temporary traffic management systems will be put in place to enable the work to be completed safely and quickly

Alternative routes are being signed, but drivers are asked to leave extra time for their journeys.
