TRANSPORT bosses are delighted with the success of extra Sunday trains on the Huddersfield to Sheffield line.

The move was made in a bid to encourage Christmas shoppers to leave the car at home.

The extra services, which are called the Penistone Northern Star, will run until December 18.

Brian Barnsley, of the Penistone Line Partnership, a voluntary group which supports the rail line, said he was delighted with the success.

He added: "This Sunday Santa will be making a guest appearance on the train and we are urging everyone to come along to meet the magical man himself.

"He will be on the 10.14 from Huddersfield and the 12.34 from Sheffield."

The extra trains have been funded by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.
