The Tardis is proving difficult to remove from the Square!

A saga over a controversial phone and cash kiosk in the heart of Huddersfield looked like it had finally come to an end.

Workmen turned up to start removing the kiosk which has blighted St George’s Square for almost 18 months.

But 24 hours later, it was still in place.

A barrier was put up around the kiosk and the power disconnected.

The phone box and cash machine had been installed on the pavement without planning permission .

Kirklees councillors twice refused permission for it and earlier this summer ordered it should be removed.

But it has taken many weeks before contractors have finally started work.

BT had been told to move the kiosk with Kirklees councillors saying it would set an unwanted precedent for street clutter in the square.

They rejected a retrospective planning application on June 13, many months after the kiosk was originally erected outside Britannia Buildings.

BT caused controversy last year when it put the grey dual phone box and cash machine next to Britannia Buildings without planning consent.

Two retrospective planning applications were rejected and the construction was labelled a “Tardis” by protesters.

Its removal was welcomed by Huddersfield Civic Society.

Spokesman Chris Marsden said: “It has taken a long, long time but it does look as it is finally going to go.

“They did say it was a protracted process because there were power cables running to the kiosk.

“From the very first moment it appeared we have objected to this Tardis-like structure.

“We will be delighted once it has finally been removed.”
