A DOG has been reunited with his delighted owners after a successful second attempt to hand the pet to police.

Jayne Fowler, 19, appealed for help from Examiner readers after Staffordshire bull terrier Itch went missing.

Her two-year-old daughter Brogan was left heartbroken by the disappearance.

The dog had broken from its chain and escaped from the garden at their Almondbury home.

The two-year-old dog was found wandering and taken to Castlegate police station.

But the man who found Itch was in a hurry and could not wait. So he entrusted Itch to another man who was also waiting at the public counter.

Instead of handing Itch over he also left the station, taking Itch with him.

The man was captured on CCTV and police are making enquiries about the incident.

Itch was handed into the police at the weekend and now Jayne has got the dog back.

She said: "The man who took him to the station said Itch had been found wandering around Golcar.

"Itch looks like he has a few war wounds from his adventure but is recovering well and sleeping it off.

"Brogan is absolutely made up. She has got her friend back."

Jayne added: "There is no doubt in my mind that without the Examiner's help Itch would never have been found."
