He was very much a homegrown hero to thousands of Huddersfield Town fans.

Burly striker Delroy Facey was the young man brought up in Huddersfield who starred for the team in blue and white stripes.

But now the man who had his name chanted by fans packing into the John Smith’s Stadium is in a jail cell, labelled a match-fixing cheat.

Facey, who played junior soccer in Huddersfield for Fartown High School and junior side Stile Common - breaking goalscoring records along the way - is now the highest-profile soccer player to be caught up in a bribery scandal.

Facey, who played 75 games for Town, had played for many top clubs but was latterly playing for Albion Sports in the NCEL Premier League.

Facey played for 14 different clubs over an 18-year career.

Born in Huddersfield in 1980 and brought up in Fartown with his three brothers and a sister, he began playing as an apprentice for Huddersfield in 1996 after starring in local football with Stile Common. He graduated through the ranks and in 2002 moved to the then Premiership side Bolton Wanderers.

Although he decided not to renew his Huddersfield contract, he was unable to leave the Second Division club on a Bosman free transfer because he was still under 23. This meant that Bolton had to pay a compensation fee.

He played only a handful of games for Bolton before embarking on a series of moves which took in the likes of Bradford City, Burnley, West Brom, Hull Cty, Oldfham Athletic, Tranmere Rovers, Rotherham, Gillingham, Notts County and Lincoln.

Facey scored 15 times in 75 appearances for Huddersfield Town at the start of his career, then went on score goals for many of his clubs.

He has also represented Grenada in international football, making his debut in July 2009.

In all he played 15 times for Grenada and scored two goals.
