DEMOLITION men have moved in to knock down Huddersfield University's Great Hall.

It is anticipated that once the site is cleared it will be used as a temporary car park.

An existing car park in the centre of the Queensgate campus is to vanish under new developments.

The Great Hall was originally to be extended, but a problem with the concrete was discovered and the building had to be demolished.

University managers have decided to put the drama department, now using premises in St Peter's Street in the town centre, into the former Milton Church.

Two new buildings are being built in the centre of the campus, one for the media department and one for the student union, which is moving out of Milton Church.

It is expected that the building work will be finished by the end of the year.

The St Peter's Street building is for sale.
