It's official - Denby Dale’s vision for a new library is a step closer.

On Monday the Denby Dale Community Project entered an official partnership with Kirklees Council and yesterday they signed a memorandum of understanding with Kirklees’ library services.

It’s intended to state how the Project will offer a library service to the wider community and with the legal process now complete, efforts are going into fundraising and drumming up more support.

Clr Jim Dodds, Denby Dale Conservative, said: “We’ve had to state how we will run the library service and help it continue to flourish.

“We have got the support from Kirklees Council and we’re now looking forward to getting a new-build library and community facility.

“We hope to be able to start work at the end of this year or early next year.

“At the moment we have 45 applications for grants in and we hope to get a boost from those.”

And he said the community remained supportive of the idea: “They are very much behind us on this.

“For the next four Saturday mornings we’ll have a stand outside Denby Dale library and the car park showing what we’re doing and asking for more support.”

The team will be in the village between 9.30am and 11.30am.

In April Kirklees Cabinet agreed the asset transfer of the current library and land to the Project and gave them £100,000 towards the overall cost.

The idea was backed as Kirklees leader Clr David Sheard warned of an uncertain future for library services. Denby Dale is one of a number of areas looking to take over the running of Kirklees libraries, Kirkburton and Meltham are among towns where residents are considering ideas to retain library provision in community trusts.
