The demand for electric cigarettes continues to increase.

They have helped my wife Maria cut down drastically on smoking real cigarettes.

Many people use the devices cut back or stop smoking altogether.

Whilst at the bar the other night, newly converted Matthew grinned as he smoked, and said: “Before long, we’ll be having e-lager as well as e-cigs.”

Which is a thought in this world of technical progress.

Perhaps in 20 years time, a bar assistant will touch a nozzle to a customer’s wrist and provide an electronic shot of Carling. The speed that this would be released into the bloodstream would be regulated to guard against binge consumption. If someone was intoxicated, the nozzle would register the fact and refuse any further download.

No one would ever spill a drink again, there would be no arguments about whether a pint needed topping up, bars would save money on washing up and hygiene standards would be raised.

Which, all in all, defeats the object of going to the pub.

Beer, lager and drinks in general titivate the taste buds. Everyone has their favourite. That’s why I drink bitter and Matthew drinks lager.

On a hot day, ale quenches the thirst; on a cold day, it can be mulled over amidst warm company.

And where would we be without being able to make witty comments to the staff about their ability to pull a perfect pint; or, when someone asks what you are drinking, being able to say “Heavily”; or causing a ripple of consternation by holding up your glass of beer to the light and shaking your head whilst saying nothing. And then watch others do the same.

Personally, I don’t think e-lager has a lot going for it.
