A derelict petrol station could be demolished to make way for shops and flats.

Developer Bayswater Ltd hopes to build a mini precinct on the site of the former Jet service station, on North Road, Kirkburton.

The site was formally owned by Tesco which had hoped to build an Express convenience store.

If Bayswater’s plans are approved, the proposed single structure will house four shops with back room offices on the ground floor.

Upstairs there will be four one-bedroom flats each with a bedroom balcony overlooking woods to the rear.

There will also be 13 parking spaces.

A Kirklees Council planning committee will decide on the application after a public consultation ends on July 24.

A spokesperson for architects Yeme, which has designed the application on behalf of Bayswater, said: “It can be seen that the site is derelict and has been vacant for several years.

“The current site is one in disrepair and is one that is attracting unsocial behaviour and vandalism to Kirkburton centre.

“It is thought that this application should be supported to allow development in Kirkburton centre which will improve the area, complement the conservation area whilst bringing further retail opportunities to the centre and offer extra accommodation and offer further job opportunities.

“The design is one that is sympathetic to the surrounding buildings and uses local materials.

“The scheme is thought to comply with both the National Planning Policy Framework and the Local Planning policies which are relevant to this development.

“The highway is unaffected by the application and measures have been taken to ensure that safe access for both service and visiting vehicles have safe movement into, around and out of the site.

“The client is keen to offer Kirkburton further retail and high class residential units and has identified this site as one ideal for development.”

The vacant site had been used as a temporary car park to alleviate inconsiderate and illegal parking on North Road.

But the area was fenced off after cracks appeared in the site and it was declared unsafe.

Kirklees Council denied Tesco planning permission for an Express store on the land.

But the decision was overturned by the Planning Inspectorate following an appeal by Tesco in 2009.

The state of the site had become a bugbear for villagers prompting then Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell to prompt Tesco to repair it.
