The M62 was shut when a man threatened to jump from a notorious bridge.

The man was spotted on the 120ft high Scammonden Bridge on Wednesday night.

Police were called at 7.50pm and the motorway was immediately closed in both directions.

Officers spoke to the man who was talked to safety. He was detained under the Mental Health Act and the motorway was re-opened just after 8.50pm.

The bridge, which carries Saddleworth Road over the M62, is an infamous suicide location.

In April the Examiner reported how the motorway was closed when a woman was found in a “distressed” state in the middle of the bridge.

She was restrained by police and led to safety.

The bridge, often known as Brown Cow Bridge, became an infamous suicide spot and the Samaritans controversially put up warning signs in October 2010.

Four people died after jumping or falling from the bridge between 2006 and 2012.
