Detectives are continuing to question a man and a woman who have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man in Newsome.

Police confirmed that a 30-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the discovery of a man’s body in a flat in Ashenhurst Rise shortly after midday on Friday.

Both suspects are currently in police custody.

Police are expected to name the victim, who is said to have lived in the flat for just four months, on Monday.

Today floral tributes could be seen at the house from his sons.

One reads: “Rest in Peace dad, Love you always, The Boys.”

Meanwhile investigations continue at the scene with further forensic work likely to be undertaken to assist with the enquiry.

A police forensics tent remained covering the front door of the Newsome flat throughout the weekend as teams look to preserve any evidence from the scene.

Earlier on Friday forensics officers were seen on the upper floor of the flat in the bedroom before the focus moved to the front door area and the tent was erected.

Items of clothing and personal belongings were seen to be brought from the flat in clear plastic bags.

Body found at Roger lane, Newsome.

Neighbourhood Police Officers continued to maintain a strong police presence in the area to reassure residents that this is being treated as an isolated incident.

Neighbours told how the victim, who has still yet to be identified, had only lived at the flat for four months and was unemployed.

Neighbour Barbara Millington, 68, said: “The first we heard was when they put the tent up in the garden and police tape. We are shocked to have something like this on our doorsteps.

“The man hadn’t been here long, only about four months. He gets up early and often goes off in taxis. I think he lived alone but a women would come to his house quite often.”

Senior Investigating Officer, Det Chief Insp Adrian Taylor said: “The identity of the deceased is not yet clear, although I can confirm he is an adult male who we believe to be the occupant of the flat.

“This is being treated as an isolated incident and there is no threat to the wider community.

“Local Neighbourhood Policing Team officers are also providing reassurance patrols in the area, speaking to residents about their concerns."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
