A developer won consent for 21 new homes in Salendine Nook.

Conroy Brook Ltd sought consent for new homes on land part-way along Laund Road.

Members of the Huddersfield Planning Committee approved it nine votes to six yesterday.

But it came after a debate between councillors of what issues they should be allowed to consider.

Clr Cahal Burke, Lindley Lib Dem said it was “inexcusable” for the council’s planning committee to continue approving more new homes without the services to accommodate them. He spoke of the oversubscribed local schools and impact on doctors, dentists and highways.

He said: “I don’t believe the loss of open space outweighs the provision of housing in this area.

“Developers are simply getting away with not contributing to education requirements ... We can’t keep building without adequate services in the area.”

Planning agent David Storrie said: “This is a site your council wants houses built on, it’s allocated as suitable land in the UDP.

“There are no planning reasons this application should be refused.”

He told councillors a local builder, employing local people, was behind the site’s plans.

During the committee’s debate Clrs Mark Hemingway and Tony Brice, both Lindley ward members, spoke of the impact from more homes.

Clr Hemingway said: “We’ve already got children having lessons in portable classrooms.”

Clr Molly Walton said the council had a responsibility to find school places and would do that if required. She said it was “nonsense” to use education as a reason for refusal, adding: “We have to find 1,457 houses every year.”

Clr Andrew Marchington asked that planning committees be given approval to consider the cumulative impact of smaller-scale housing developments.

It was approved with conditions, including eight affordable homes.
