A CAMPAIGN to save Dewsbury's law courts from the axe has failed.

The town's magistrates' and county courts will close as planned, along with 140 others across the country, as part of cost-cutting measures, the Ministry of Justice announced.

Closures will start in April, although it is not yet known when Dewsbury's courts will shut their doors.

Huddersfield's magistrates' and county courts will take on much of the work from Dewsbury.

The closure of the two courts in Dewsbury was opposed by MP Simon Reevell, as well as Kirklees councillors.

A 500-signature petition was handed to 10 Downing Street.

Mr Reevell said the decision to go ahead with the closures was a blow for the principle of local justice.
