A man who stole a £4,000 scooter from a teenager the day after he got it, has been jailed for 14 months.

Leeds Crown Court heard the 17-year-old complainant had only acquired his vehicle on July 19 last year and was riding it to see some friends in Mirfield the next day.

He passed Anton Lee Copperwaite and two others riding mopeds and thought nothing of it. Later he saw one of his friends with that group and stopped to talk to them at London Park.

John Bull, prosecuting, said while they were talking Copperwaite walked up and asked for a go on his scooter.

The teenager refused making an excuse about running out of fuel, but Copperwaite ignored him and jumped on the bike. The teenager also jumped on behind him as he set off telling him to stop.

They reached Taylor Hall Lane where Copperwaite pushed backwards forcing the owner off the back and rode off. The bike was never recovered and the thief was in breach of an anti-social behaviour order banning him from the area involved.

Michael Jowett for Copperwaite said the defendant suffers from osteomyelitis which left him tired and angry but he was now learning to cope with the debilitating illness and the unhappiness he felt as a result.

Copperwaite, 22 of Sefton Rise, Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury, admitted theft and breach of an ASBO.
