AN MP has backed calls for Kirklees Council to be divided.

Last week the Conservatives unveiled a plan to split the area into two councils – Greater Huddersfield and Dewsbury and Spen.

Simon Reevell backed the plan yesterday.

The Conservative Dewsbury MP said: “Kirklees has become too big, cumbersome and distant.

“The proposals to split the council will mean that in the future, local views will be heard.

“Labour and Lib Dem councillors have to realise that there is huge support amongst people who would not usually vote Conservative for the council to be split.”

If the plan goes ahead, Mr Reevell’s constituency would be split between two councils.

Kirkburton and Denby Dale would be in Greater Huddersfield while Dewsbury and Mirfield would be included in the new Dewsbury and Spen council.
