Faith minister Baroness Warsi has dismissed suggestions of a link between conservative Islam and terrorism as she waded into the row over extremism in schools.

The Dewsbury peer, who was the first Muslim woman to attend Cabinet, appeared at odds with Michael Gove over his handling of the Trojan Horse plot allegations and briefings that led to the public spat with Home Secretary Theresa May.

Rhetoric from the Education Secretary’s department over tackling extremism was “sensationalised” the Tory said as she insisted her experience of dealing with the issue was first-hand rather than a Whitehall paper-exercise.

Mr Gove announced yesterday that all schools will be made to promote “British values” after five Birmingham schools were put into special measures in the wake of takeover plot claims.

Baroness Warsi said the fallout of the long-running furore over the schools “no doubt” risked alienating some communities.

She added: “It is important the way in which we tackle these matters is done to resolve the problem and not make matters worse.”
