IT may be 70 miles from the coast.

But Dewsbury is about to be transformed into Britain’s latest seaside resort.

Celebrating its 15th year, Dewsbury on Sea is heading back on Saturday August 25 when the town centre is transformed into a beach side.

There will be a wide range of attractions to draw people in for a day of family fun.

Clr Jean Calvert, cabinet member for communities, said “Dewsbury on Sea is a firm favourite on the calendar and I’m delighted that we’re able to celebrate 15 glorious years of this fantastic event.

“I’m sure its going to be even better than before. All the usual attractions will be there, including funfair rides, donkeys and, of course, the Ponderosa-sponsored giant beach.”

People will be able to relax by the beach side or wander down to Market Corner and watch Ray, a professional sand sculptor, create amazing artwork using just sand, water and his imagination.

For younger visitors, there is the story tent with tales told with special effects, music and puppetry.

The festival also includes the Titanic Slide, a giant inflatable, the Beach Ball Challenge and races and games at Muscle Beach.

In the days leading up to Dewsbury on Sea, Dewsbury Library is hosting a seaside-themed craft activity on Friday August 24 between 2pm and 4pm, which is open to everyone.

And Bagshaw Museum in Batley is putting on an exhibition in the Wish You Were Here seaside gallery, including a traditional Punch and Judy booth.
