A POLICEWOMAN who helped convict sex attacker Ciaron Smith said she believed there were other victims.

Det Con Joanne Garside, of Huddersfield CID, said: "I am quite sure there are other girls who Smith has abused, harmed or threatened.

"Many young girls were frequenting his house in Huddersfield. Now he is safely locked away, we want them to come forward.

"We will see if we get more reports."

Det Con Garside added: "All child protection cases are extremely involved and when you have child victims the impact on the child and the family is always huge."

Police worked with Kirklees social services and other council departments on the case after concerns were raised about Smith's relationship with the victim.

Det Con Garside said the victim was interviewed during her time in hospital being treated for the injuries inflicted by Smith.

The officer said: "The girl was absolutely petrified and would not speak to us at first.

"She feared for her life. But after numerous visits, she told us everything and it was extre- mely emotional."

Det Con Garside said the conviction was "a good result".

She said: "This man has terrorised everyone who ever came into contact with him - including members of his own family.

"A lot of people in Huddersfield will breathe a sigh of relief he has now been jailed for a substantial period," said Det Con Garside.
